Luxmuralis ‘Space’ London Review

Luxmuralis is a projection art company that is taking over a central London church for their latest show ‘Space’. St Martin in the fields is about to get lit up using a technique called ‘projection mapping’ in which a computer-assisted light show will be cast on to both the interior and exterior of St Martin in the fields.

With more and more “immersive” art installations popping up across London, it’s hard not to be critical when reviewing. If I’m honest, I find it almost insulting when companies hire out a venue and a projector and call it an immersive experience so I was really hoping there would be more to this experience.

The experience

So we were asked to queue from the back of the St Martin in the Fields courtyard and honestly, I don’t know if it was because it was the first night but it was a shambles. Tickets were checked but they didn’t seem too bothered about time slots and the queing system seemed very disorganised.

The first part is a 10 minute projection on the side of the church which, if I’m honest, is extremely confusing. You’re craning your neck up as it is and it’s very difficult to figure out what they’re showing. The lady next to me said it seemed like they just got a few photos from Google without too much thought and I have to say, I kind of agree!

Next you’re led through the cafe into the crypt which feels very cool and almot eerie. There’s a projection of stars on to the full crypt which is great for all, especially the little kids. There was also a cordoned off projection of the sun in a little corner, which would’ve been nice to sit in. You can spend as much time as you want here as there was no one ushering you through. Then when you’re ready, you go up to the finale.

As you walk in there’s a giant projection of space themed images, moving along to David Harper’s composition. I want to be annoyed at capitalism, but whilst sitting in the pews, gazing up at the projection and immersed in the music, I just enjoy it and take it all in. We actually ended up sitting for two rounds of the projection.

What did I really think?

I think for £10 it’s definitely a cute little visit. I liked that the experience wasn’t rushed and you can take your time through it. It’s also great that it could be enjoyed by all age groups. I will say though, the staff are rude.
As far as I could tell, the experience is accessible too. You can take photos and videos and they even have a mini gift shop at the end.

Would I recommed it? I think if you take into account the price and don’t expect too much then it’s a nice trip out.
