So back in December 2019, just as we were heading into 2020 I cut my hair the shortest I’ve cut it in a long time. I decided that I was going to invest in my hair and take the time to look after it much more. Sadly with the lockdown, I have now had to look into the best way I can do this at home.
This week I’m asking Blue Tit for tips on the best way to keep my hair in perfect condition during lockdown and here’s how they answered some of my questions.

Declan Haworth, Colour Director at Blue Tit London says:
Take this time to give your hair and scalp a break from chemical processes, heat styling and even a break from mechanical stresses like tight ponytails or hair extensions.
Apply at-home treatments to your hair like a hair-mask or try a new routine and styling technique that doesn’t require heat.
Additionally, if you have accessories at home you can use them to pin back overgrown fringes and try new styles.
Rumer Cliffton, stylist at Blue Tit Clapton Salon says:
Maintaining your hair condition and wanting to grow your hair requires TLC. Particularly if you use heated tools or get your hair coloured.
Naturally, during the winter months, our hair and skin tend to be gasping for more moisture probably due to the vast contrast between the temperatures inside and outside. So before we get to Spring, now is a great time to ensure your hairs moisture levels are up!
Regular hair treatments that work to repair the hair from the inner layer are much more beneficial than regular hair masks which only work to soften and nourish the hair on the surface.
Oway rebuilding treatment utilises infrared and ultrasound iron to reconstruct the protective layer around the hair cuticle, enhancing the hair repair process. One of the main ingredients in the rebuilding serum being basil – known for its strengthening action and other elements and minerals that supply softness and resistance to the hair. Perfect for generally thirsty, brittle hair and hair lacking protein from over processing.
Another tip: steering clear of any products that contain sulfates, parabens and silicone. These ingredients give you a false sense of cleanliness and actually leave a layer of product build up, meaning your hair will need washing more frequently. We rely on the natural oils our scalp produces for new hair to grow, and a healthy scalp means healthy hair, so avoid over washing!
Olaplex or any bond building treatment if you have coloured hair or an intense mask that you can leave one for about half an hour.
Serums and split end sealers are great leave in, after a wash product. These lock in moisture, close down the cuticle, and help prevent split ends.
The best way to apply serums or split end sealers is on freshly washed, towel dried hair.
Just one small pump of serum should be plenty, but obviously if you have super long/ thick hair then try half a pump more. But always start with one pump.
Work the product through your hands, this is so you don’t get a concentrated patch in the hair, and work through the hair avoiding the roots and concentrating on the mid lengths and ends. One you have worked this all through hair, you are free to style it how you like.
When you do wash your hair, you only need a small amount of shampoo each time. Similarly with a conditioner you only need a small amount too. Work this through the mid lengths and ends, and comb through with a tangle teezer type brush/ comb to ensure it’s all worked in. While we have the time, clip that up and leave it for about 5-10mins.
Over washing your hair can leave it dry and brittle due to the lack of natural oils that our bodies produce to maintain a healthy scalp and hair. No more than 2-3 times a week is what I recommend.
Use professional products. A good shampoo and conditioner are the first steps to good hair. Try to find a shampoo that is paraben, sulphate, silicone free.
