MAC Prep + Prime Skin base visage primer is the first primer I ever bought. I didn’t really know what it did or what it was for but I had just gotten paid and the sales assistant was very persuasive! 3 years later, this is still my every day go to primer.
The packaging is great as it comes in a lightweight, yet sturdy plastic bottle. The pump allows you to access the primer without too much of a mess. The pump mechanism isn’t very stiff either so you’re able to control the amount that comes out of the bottle. Waste not want not!
The primer has small light reflecting particles in it and this is supposed to make your skin glow and look healthy. In other words, it has tiny flecks of glitter in it. All that glitters…! (I’m on a roll with these today). It was an initial concern to me, as I don’t have the best of skin and I didn’t want it to draw too much attention to it, but in all honesty, it gets covered with my full coverage foundation anyway, so not too much of a concern there.
The primer does what it says on the bottle and acts as a great “skin base” for your skin. It pumps out as a pearly white mousse like fluid which easily glides on to your skin to become a transparent base. One of the great plus points to this primer is that it is weightless. It blends so easily on to your skin and once it’s on, you can’t feel it sitting on your skin like a lot of primers. Despite it having a slight shimmer, it does not leave a greasy or sticky residue either, so bonus points for that.
Whilst writing this review I did a little research on what the brand itself says about the product and I was a little surprised that MAC’s website boasts that it is
“An ultra-fluid lotion formulated with special-effect silicones. Calms and soothes the skin, blots away excess oil, and evens out skin redness. Improves the laydown and application of foundation or powder”
I don’t necessarily agree that it calms or soothes my skin nor did I find that the foundation took away excess oil or keep it at bay, however it does provide a great every day base for my foundation.
Overall after 3 years of regular use, I can say that the Skin Base Visage Primer keeps my foundation in place for the most part of the day. It’s not fantastic for hiding the large pores and acne scars as a heavier, more silicon based primer would be, however it is great for every day use.
