Sudha Bhuchar is a middle-class, middle-aged mother of two mixed heritage millennials. Walking through the audience with her coat on and backpack in hand, she’s ready to recall the evening conversations she had throughout lockdown with her sons. Sudha is both charming and witty. She commands the room in a gentle, motherly type of way whilst she delivers an irreverent monologue that covers everything from Tupperware to identity.

Being British Indian myself, I could relate to a lot of the sentiments and caught myself thinking about my own mother and our confusion over identity. In her one woman show, Sudha admits she is prone to veering off topic and to me this may actually have been a downfall in the show. Her sons have even willed her to write a play that has “more plot” already.
I couldn’t imagine myself in her home overlooking the conversations because there was no setting of scenes. Instead, whilst Sudha sat in the chair opposite us, it actually felt like catching up with an old friend and hearing of her evening conversations of her colourful household – which to me, is always time well spent.
