I’ll be the first to admit, I am addicted to Twitter (follow me! – @damzlinthisdres). The fact that I can speak to someone at any given time, from any part of the world, keep up to date with breaking news and witness first hand, the latest celebrity melt down, well, what’s not to love?
After some considerable thought and a number of ‘off’ days in the past week, I’ve reflected on some of the reasons why perhaps living through a screen isn’t always so wonderful and also why we should all consider going offline a little bit more.
Here are 6 reasons why you might want to consider a digital detox:
1. The expectancy that we must always be available. With great communication comes great responsibility, and it turns out that by having an app on your phone where you can speak to someone instantly, it’s often expected that we’re always readily available. Blue ticks and read receipts mean that there’s even more pressure on responding straight away. Being accessible is great but it’s not something you HAVE to commit to, the world won’t stop turning just because you didn’t respond immediately.
2. Sleepless nights. More and more research is showing a correlation between using technology just before you go to bed and having problems sleeping. I do this A LOT, where I say bye on twitter before turning off my laptop to go to sleep, only to get into bed and go on it again on my phone. The body needs to relax and wind down before drifting off into sleep and the excitement of notifications and thinking up witty tweets doesn’t help in the slightest. We all need to rest in order to be the best versions of ourselves and to take on the world.
3. Comparison is a bitch. Social media allows us to follow all sorts of people we aspire to be like. Its perfectly natural to compare yourself to others, in fact it’s healthy to have big dreams and goals however when you start focusing on others more than yourself, then it’s an issue. A digital detox allows you to stop scrolling through picture perfect lives and focus on what you want to do and what makes you happy. Do you really enjoy eating that salad? Or is it because you saw it advertised on Kylie Jenner’s instagram?
4. It’s a numbers game. As a blogger I really enjoy monitoring my blog stats and follow counts. Honestly speaking, it’s as rewarding as it is tiresome and frustrating however when you’re obsessing over the number of likes and follows you have then it’s important to take a step back and really think about why. Your happiness should never be dependant on the numbers of likes on a picture or followers on an account. If it’s really getting to you then it’s definitely time to switch off.
5. You speak to your friends every day on whatsapp but can’t remember the last time you met up with friends face to face. Whatsapp is one of the greatest inventions ever, really it is, but as humans we instinctively crave human interaction. When detoxing digitally you have a sudden realisation that not only is it great to catch up face to face with friends and communicate without the use of emoji’s, but you have a shared experience that your memory will hold on to a lot better than just text on a screen.
6. The need to keep up with the latest beauty releases, memes and most talked about vlogs is a lot of pressure on anyone. Sometimes it’s hard to switch off due to fear of missing out but the reality of it is, you’ll never be able to keep up with the ever evolving nature of the internet. If you don’t hear about the latest and greatest thing to have happened first, it really doesn’t make you any less of a person. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.
You might agree with some or even none of these points but just writing this post has made me realise that it’s so easy to get caught up with an addiction to social media. I don’t think any less of SM nor will I be deleting my blog and throwing away my phone any time soon but it’s important to remind ourselves that self care is such an important part of life that we should all practise a little more.
