Kevyn Aucoin The Etherealist Skin Illuminating Foundation Review

Today I want to share with you all the joy that I am feeling because I have found my perfect ‘holy grail’ foundation!!! Eek! If you’re been following my blog for a while, you’ll know my struggles with finding the right shade, but no more will I be subjected to sitting uncomfortably whilst a sales assistant matches me to the shade of an orange. Let me introduce you to Kevyn Aucoin – The Etherealist Skin Illuminating Foundation.

Kevyn Aucoin The Etherealist Skin illuminating Foundation

This hydrating, lightweight foundation is formulated to leave skin with a luminous glow.  The Etherealist foundation is cult buy because it is one of the first foundation’s that I have come across to have real science behind it. The illuminating foundation contains “ultra-fine pearl pigments which reflect light and minimize shadows, while radiance magic pearl powder diffuses light and brightens” the skin. I’ve always been sceptical about light reflecting cosmetics (unless it’s actual glitter) but the thing that sold me most was that this foundation contains Hyaluronic acid. If you’re not familair with it, Hyaluronic acid is a biopolymer naturally occurring in the skin and is highly effective humectant, i.e. an ingredient that holds moisture. HA can hold hundreds of times its weight in water and is often used in moisturising formulas. Perfect for dry or ageing skin!

The Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Foundation comes in a plastic bottle (great for travel!) featuring the brands signature red and black gradient design. It’s difficult to design foundation bottles that are different as there are so many already on the market, but this one is perfect. The Etherealist foundation bottles comes with a built in airless pump which is great for a number of reasons; first of all it’s great for hygiene, it keeps the air out to stop oxidisation over time and it makes sure that there is no waste at all. Considering how much I’m paying, I want to be using every last drop! As the product gets used, you can see right through the bottle just how much foundation is left – you can see from the picture, I’ve been getting stuck into mine!

There are currently 16 shades available to choose from. I picked up shade 7 which is a medium with neutral undertones. I’ve always struggled a lot when it comes to foundation shade matching because most brands cater to either pink undertones or yellow. Either of those two undertones just doesn’t look right on me, so if you’re in a similar situation you’re in luck! Here is a full list of all the shades with descriptions:

If you’re still a little bit overwhelmed with the shades then Shade 7 will match closest to MAC NC30.

My favourite thing about this foundation is the finish. It dries somewhere in-between matte and dewy so it looks completely natural and gives it an airbrushed effect. It’s so lightweight making it really easy to blend out into the skin and doesn’t dry, look or feel caked on at all.
Adding hyaluronic acid into the formula was absolutely genius. I would definitely recommend it for people with mature or dry skin or those with large pores (like me!). Although it isn’t advertised, the foundation is also high in silicones, which means it’s great to create a diffused or blurred pores effect. I usually use a silicone based primer but with this foundation I don’t feel like I need to.

Although Kevyn Aucoin States that this foundation is sheer-medium coverage, I think it’s medium- high coverage. To demonstrate I’ve used a tiny pea sized amount all over my cheek and you can see just how good the coverage is already. My pigmentation has been covered and my acne scarring is barely showing up. When you use a good amount on your skin the coverage is so good that it creates an amazing blank canvas. For someone like me who has pigmentation and scarring, it’s literally a dream come true.

The consistency is very creamy so it’s brilliant to build up with and easily sinks into your skin. I have to admit the foundation isn’t completely transfer proof so I do have to top it up, however if I’ve worn it on a day where I’m way too busy to touch my face it easily stays on for 8-10 hours.

The Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Foundation is available for purchase at Space NK, perfect if you want to go and colour match yourself or alternatively you can purchase online at Cult Beauty or Beauty Bay. There is a price difference though (!) as at Space NK it is £50 whereas the online retailers are selling it for £46.

For me this is the ultimate high end foundation and I’m completely obsessed. I can’t see myself ever looking back and would definitely recommend you give it a try.
