Cages London Musical Review

Cages is dubbed as a groundbreaking new musical that promises a less conventional piece of theatre and a more unique live experience. The trailer didn’t give much away and I suppose I didn’t want any spoilers so I went in blindly.

Cages London

Riverside studios is a short walk away from Hammersmith station. I thought it was unusual that they picked a recording studio for this but I had never been before and I quite liked the venue. It seemed more casual then a theatre in the west end and the vibe was definitely more relaxed.

As we walk into the studio the lights are low and the seating is…just regular chairs. Definitely a more casual affair. Once the show begins some of the actors are in the front, almost zombie like, but then the rest of the show moves to the stage.

What’s so special about cages?

Cages is nothing like you’ve seen before. Similar in vein to ABBA Voyage, the use of progressive technology creates a completely new experience. The actors interact with characters played by holograms and the wit and special effects all come together for a really fun watch.

What did I really think?

The concept itself is great but the show itself needs some work. The story doesn’t have any depth and there’s no real rapport built between the audience and the characters. Not sure whether the fact that some characters are holograms or just because the background story doesn’t really get explained in the first half.

It’s a little cheesy at times but the songs are catchy and the use of holograms work really well. The actor who played Woolf was on point for each and every scene and honestly credit to him. I must admit though, the strong strobe lighting did leave me disoriented and with a slight headache by the time we left.

Is it worth the price?

Having seen the show I’m shocked that the premium tickets are being sold for almost £90 per seat. I’m sorry to say it’s definitely not worth that much.

Would I recommend it? Only if you can get super cheap tickets. Also, try to sit further back for a better experience.
Would I go again? This is a tough one, I enjoyed the experience but there was just something lackluster about it so maybe not.
